Love, sex & your mental health

In this podcast (episode #474) and blog, I talk about ways to improve your relationship, develop sexual intimacy, and increase your health and longevity. This is part 2 of my series on love, sex, relationships and wellbeing.

As mentioned in part 1, safe, consensual sex in a loving relationship can help improve our health and wellbeing and even increase our longevity.

But this is not just about sex. How well we interact with and relate to our partner will lay the foundation for a fulfilling and intimate relationship. Of course, this is easier said than done—as I am sure you know, relationships can be complicated! This is why I recommend creating rituals and routines in a relationship to improve sexual intimacy and overall health.

Routines are things you have or need to do, such as cleaning the dishes after dinner or going to work at a certain time. Rituals are intentional practices/acts/events that you can create with your partner to build connection and enhance intimacy. They help create meaning and purpose in a relationship.

Routines in relationships can minimize uncertainty and lead to less anxiety about the nature of the relationship. They help you direct the neuroplasticity of the brain in the right direction (that is, the brain’s ability to change), giving you a sense of accomplishment, especially when you do them together with your partner.

Routines can also help reduce stress and the likelihood of everyday tasks turning into an argument. If you and your partner take the time to talk about your routines and help each other with daily tasks when possible, or support your partner while they have to complete an urgent task, you help build up trust in a relationship and improve communication, which are integral to better intimacy.

However, routines can also hinder a relationship if they start becoming mundane. This is where rituals can help. A ritual is a special “thing” partners participate in together, and can help re-establish a sense of purpose in a relationship that feels more like a habit. They are a great way to encourage you and your partner to intentionally spend time with each other!

Some examples of rituals are:

  • Spending a certain amount of time every day exercising together, such as going to the gym, walking or doing yoga together.
  • Planning a weekly date night.
  • Going out for coffee during the week.
  • Planning an annual vacation for just the two of you.
  • Scheduling in a day for yourself, which can help you both to learn to honor each other's space.

BetterHelp. Therapy is something that many people are either ashamed about or joke about. Yet the need to speak to someone about what is going on is neither shameful nor funny. It takes courage to take that step—to recognize that asking for help is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. At its core, therapy is all about deepening your self-awareness and understanding, because sometimes we don't know what we want, or why we react the way we do, until we talk through things. Getting to know yourself can be a lifelong process, especially because we’re always growing and changing! Even at my age, I am still growing and learning, such as how to respond better to failure and learn how to accept the past without regret. This is why I love BetterHelp: it is a platform that can connect you with a licensed therapist who can take you on that journey of self-discovery from wherever you are in your life. It’s entirely online, and designed to be convenient, flexible, and suited to your schedule. Just fill out a brief questionnaire to get matched with a licensed therapist, and switch therapists any time for no additional charge. So, if you’re thinking of starting therapy, give BetterHelp a try! Discover your potential with BetterHelp. Visit BetterHelp.com/DRLEAF today to get 10% off your first month.

Air Doctor. Americans spend an average of 90% of their time indoors. According to the EPA, this indoor air could be 2 - 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, and in some cases it could be 100 times MORE polluted! And new data from the WHO (World Health Organization) shows that 9 out of 10 people breathe air that exceeds WHO pollution limits, and that air pollution is responsible for nearly 7 million premature deaths across the world every year. We take about 20,000 breaths per day, that’s almost 3,000 gallons of possibly polluted air! So what’s the solution? An Air Purifier that has captured the attention of established media outlets as CNN, Money, ABC, and more: AirDoctor! This incredible product filters out dangerous contaminants and allergens, so your lungs don’t have to. AirDoctor uses an UltraHEPA filter that’s been independently tested to remove 99.99% of tested bacteria and viruses. Allergens can vary in size, but the average pollen size is about 25 microns. AirDoctor virtually removes 100% of particles as small as .003 microns in size. And AirDoctor comes with a no questions asked, 30-day money back guarantee so if you don’t love it, just send it back for a refund, minus shipping. So head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code DRLEAF and, depending on the model, you’ll receive UP TO 40% off.
