The Real Reason 92% of Goals Don't Stick

Why do we set the same goals year after year, only to find ourselves stuck in the same patterns? The answer isn't what you think, and it has nothing to do with willpower or motivation....

In this week's podcast episode, I talk about why up to 92% of long-term goals never stick, and why willpower has almost nothing to do with it. When a goal feels too big, the non-conscious mind treats it as a threat and pulls us back toward what is familiar, even when the familiar is exactly what we are trying to leave. I also walk you through the five steps that can change this pattern:

Shrink the Goal

A goal that feels oversized gets rejected before it ever begins. Shrinking it down to a single, almost uneventful action is what lets the mind say yes instead of resisting. Ask yourself what one action is so small you would not resist doing it, and start there.

Update the Identity Story

Underneath every goal is a story about who you are, and that story predicts what you will do next. If the story still says you do not finish things, the mind will keep defaulting to that prediction. Naming the old story is the first step to replacing it with one built on the evidence you are creating now.

Define a Clear Starting Line

A vague first step leaves the mind with nowhere to go, so it falls back to old routines. The fix is specificity: not the whole plan, just the exact next action, defined clearly enough that nothing is ambiguous about what happens first.

Build Evidence

The mind trusts patterns, not intentions. One small completed action becomes proof the mind can build on, and repeated proof is what turns an occasional effort into a pattern the mind expects to continue.

Daily Check-In

A short daily moment, just a minute or two, to notice what got done and what comes next keeps the new pattern active. This is what moves a hopeful shift into something durable.

These five steps build real momentum. If you want to go further and get to the actual root of the thought pattern driving the behavior, that is what the Neurocycle is for, and I walk through it in the full episode.
